Most AI programs stall after the demo. The model impresses in a meeting, then never changes how the organization actually operates.
Start from the decision
The fix is unglamorous: name the decision or workflow you want to improve, then work backward to the data, the model, and the governance. When the target is a real decision, success is measurable and failure is visible early.
If you can't name the decision the AI improves, you don't have an AI strategy: you have a demo.
Governance is what makes it usable
Sources, confidence, human review, and monitoring are not overhead: they are what let people trust the system enough to use it. Applied intelligence is a governed capability inside a workflow, not an autonomous replacement for judgment.
